Like the glaciers that it killed, it moved slowly, raising temperatures almost imperceptibly, changing weather patterns, extending hurricane seasons and spawning floods in places that weren’t prepared for them. Society, on the verge of something great with the first manned colony on Mars, collapsed instead. Rival warlords gobble up the scraps left behind in the ensuing anarchy…

In 2022, I am returning to the nonfiction writing that got me published in the first place. Research, interviews, and sound, trustworthy writing. My main focus is our attitudes as a people toward apocalypse and what it means about us. This isn’t about religious apocalypse, though that’s certainly a point of reference. This project also lets me cross-connect my podcast to my freelancing.

Whatever you believe about climate change, it has become a mainstay of the apocalyptic sub-genre of science fiction. Like nuclear war fiction before it, climate fiction has filled a hole in the human condition. In climate fiction, humans have found a voice for perceived wrongs, a passion for the desire for justice, and the will to create change. In many ways, cli-fi approaches the same attitudes and the inherent human condition that nuclear fiction did in the latter half of the last century.

And to be fair, there are plenty of other ways for a society to die, and I will be exploring them as well. I’m researching everything from alien invasion to robots. But important to the entire project is the “why” behind our love for this form of fiction and what that love says about us.

I’m not in a position to share much more than that at this moment, but rest assured, the message of hope that I always try to convey in my writing will find a place here as well. This idea has already spawned several article ideas, essays, and a book.

My other writing goals include writing for Christian magazines and newspapers again. Ideally, I’d see an article or two in a major Christian publication in addition to this book project. And of course podcasting remains a priority, but this idea will be my main thrust in terms of writing.

I can’t wait to share with you what comes of this year. Stay tuned…
